The Katsomo link is resolved by our media extractor. It asks Katsomo for the list of renditions it publishes for that item, takes the best progressive one and streams it through to you as the GIF file. Nothing is transcoded on the way, so quality is whatever Katsomo encoded at. Katsomo's extractor is currently flagged as unreliable upstream, so an occasional failure there is expected rather than surprising.
