Pinterest links arrive in two shapes and we route them differently. A post or album URL goes to the gallery extractor, which walks the attached files; a stream URL goes to the media extractor, which negotiates renditions. Paste either and the right one picks it up. Pinterest is wired into both extractors. A post or album URL goes to the gallery route and returns the files attached to it; a stream URL goes to the media route and returns one negotiated rendition. Same box, different machinery, decided by the shape of the link.

Among others: allpins, board, created, pin. Those are separate URL shapes with separate handling behind them, which is why a link that looks nothing like the last one you pasted still works.

Whatever the URL names. A single-item Pinterest link returns that item; a collection or feed URL returns what the collection holds. If you got more than you expected, you pasted the container rather than the item.

MP4 — whatever Pinterest itself serves. The container is passed straight through rather than rebuilt, so there is no second round of compression between the platform's copy and yours.
