The process, start to finish

No app, no extension, no account. The whole thing is a text box and a link — you paste the Mastodon URL, we resolve it, you get the audio file. Anything more than that would be us adding steps for our benefit rather than yours. Everything from Mastodon goes through the gallery route, which enumerates a post's files instead of negotiating a stream. Mastodon is one of the smaller integrations here, so the extractor keeps its handling deliberately general rather than assuming a page layout.

What you actually have to do

Only if the post holds an audio file to begin with. Mastodon runs through the gallery route, which returns the files a post contains — it does not pull an audio track out of a video stream, because that route never touches a stream. If there is audio in the post you get it; if there is not, no amount of asking will produce it.

Because Mastodon is handled by the gallery route. It enumerates the files attached to the post or album you pointed at instead of picking one, so a post with eight images returns eight images. If you only wanted one, link the individual item rather than the container.

Because there is nothing to select between. The gallery route returns the file as Mastodon stored it — one version, at its uploaded size. A quality menu here would be decoration over a single option.

Mastodon is one of the smaller integrations here, so the handling is kept general on purpose rather than assuming a specific page layout that could change next week. Ordinary item links are the ones most likely to resolve cleanly.

Not by us. There is no re-encode step in the path, so the file you get is bit-for-bit what Mastodon served. Whatever compression Mastodon applied when it accepted the upload is already baked in and cannot be undone by anyone.
